Biographical Sketch

Prof. Ronnie Friedman, former Vice-President for Advancement and External Relations, is a Professor of Immunology and holds the Ron Barbaro Chair in Veterinary Medicine. The HU alumnus is the former Dean of the University’s Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, former Head of the Department of Animal Sciences, and former Vice-Dean for Teaching. 

 

Born in South Africa, his family immigrated to Israel in 1960, and he grew up near Jerusalem. Prof. Friedman earned his B.Sc. in Agriculture and his M.Sc. in Immunology from the Hebrew University and his Ph.D. in Immunology from the Weizmann Institute of Science.  He undertook postdoctoral research in Immunology at Harvard Medical School and has since spent time there as a research fellow and a visiting professor.  He has also been a research fellow in avian immunology at the Institute of Animal Health in the United Kingdom. Professor Friedman joined the Hebrew University in 1986.

 

Prof. Friedman’s research focuses on the development and function of intestinal immunity in mammals and birds. His work, based on advanced techniques in biology and immunology, has been instrumental in deciphering mechanisms of immune tolerance in the gut. Recently, he has become interested in eco-immunology – the functioning of the immune system in the wild. 

 

The recipient of numerous research grants, Prof. Friedman has published some100 papers, reviews and chapters in international journals and proceedings, and has presented numerous invited lectures worldwide (for a comprehensive list of publications see Prof. Friedman's Google Scholar Page.

 

Presently he is Chair of the Hebrew Youth University for the Advancement of Science Education.
